American Book Company.

The American Book Company was formed in 1890 by consolidation of Van Antwerp, Bragg and Co., A.S. Barnes and Co., D. Appleton and Co., and Iveson, Blakeman and Co. The collection includes the records of the company which manufactured books and educational materials in several locations in the United States, with head offices in New York City; the book list embraced all subjects at all educational levels. The collection is primarily textbooks, including several editions as far back as 1840 of the McGuffey readers; also included are business records and illustrations.

Cook, Howard Norton, 1901-1980

Correspondence (1928-1972); artwork (original watercolors and reproductions); writings by Cook (articles, essays, reminiscences about the Taos community, statements and notes on Cook's artistic philosophy); and memorabilia, including financial and legal documents, and printed material (articles, reviews, clippings about Cook, exhibition announcements, invitations, and catalogs). Correspondents include artists Ernest L. Blumenschein, Victor Candell, Jean Charlot, Fred Conway, Russell Cowles, Andrew Dasburg, Lamar Dodd, Ernest Fiene, Lez Haas, John Haley, Ward Lockwood, Henry Lee McFee, B.J.O. Nordfeldt, Arthur Osver, Rudolph Ruzicka, Millard Sheets, and Carl Zigrosser. Other correspondents include Margaret Anderson, Joseph Blumenthal, John Hodgdon Bradley, J. Frank Dobie, and Lenore Marshall. Extensive correspondence relating to Cook's mural work includes that of the Mayo Clinic, the U. S. Post Office, the U.S. Public Buildings Administration, and the U.S. Treasury Department.

Crane, Stephen, 1871-1900.

Papers of the American novelist, journalist, poet, war correspondent. Collection includes correspondence, writings, and memorabilia of the American author and his wife, Cora Crane, and includes the research materials from a number of literary scholars and private collectors. The Stephen Crane Collection Photographs and the Lillian Gilkes Papers unrelated to Crane are inventoried and housed separately. In addition, many published Crane works and reference materials are located in Special Collections.

Durney, Helen R.

Spanning 1934 to 1942, the Helen R. Durney Papers comprises Artwork, Correspondence, Writings, and Memorabilia of the American illustrator (d.1970). In addition to the Dumbo material, the collection includes sketches for other projects, copies of Durney's column for Design Magazine, and a transcript of her radio program over station WFBL of Syracuse.

Kipling, Rudyard, 1865-1936.

Papers of the British author, novelist, poet, journalist. Includes correspondence, writings, and memorabilia of Kipling himself, well as research material from a number of private collections. Kipling material consists of correspondence, totaling over 950 items (over 750 authored by Kipling); writings, including manuscript (handwritten and typed) and published versions of Kipling's prose, speeches, verse and dramatic works; memorabilia (legal material, photographs, portraits and caricatures); printed materials; writings by others; and miscellany. The private collections consist of Kipling material formerly owned by H.H. and S.S. McClure, E.W. Martindell, and Alan D. Wilson.
